At a Senate appropriations hearing on the funding of global health programs on Wednesday, pop music icon Elton John told lawmakers that they could end the disease Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS.
“Mr. Chairman, this is the most powerful legislative body in the world,” John said in his prepared remarks at the Senate Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related programs hearing. “And this Congress indeed has the power to end AIDS.
“You have the power to maintain America ‘s historic commitment to leading the global campaign against this disease,” John said. “I am here today to ask you to use that power.”
“To seize this window of opportunity,” said John, who is married to a man. “To change the course of the world.”
