Labor Secretary Thomas Perez said Wednesday that President Barack Obama told a group of young single mothers during a trip to Minnesota several months ago that their children could be the next president of the United States.
After all the press left, “the president talked to them about how, ‘You know what, my mother was 18 years old when I was born,’” Perez said quoting the president. “‘One of you, you know, may be helping to raise the next president of the United States. It can be you.’”
Perez gave the keynote speech at an “immigration plenary” at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s annual public policy conference in Washington, D.C., which included a panel discussion about Obama’s pledge to expand his executive order giving illegal aliens brought to the U.S. as children protection from deportation.
