NIH Spends $380K to Help Prisoners Sign Up for Medicaid

The National Institutes of Health has awarded $380,000 to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill to sign prisoners up for Medicaid.

“Prison-based Medicaid enrollment assistance programs (PBMEAPs) have the potential to improve access to healthcare for prisoners upon their release,” the grant said.

“The transition from prison back to the community is particularly difficult,” the grant said, “and is considerably more challenging for those with severe and chronic health conditions, most of whom have no health insurance.”

The grant argues that the health of the 700,000 prisoners that are released from prison each year “has a pervasive effect on the health of the communities and families to which they return.”
