When asked whether she considered ending her pregnancy upon learning that her unborn daughter Mia was going to be born with a cleft lip and possible cleft palate, Duck Dynasty’s Missy Robertson said, “absolutely not,” stressing that “God gave each and every one of us life, as a gift,” and that “Mia has a special importance now in her life” because of her condition, which has been corrected over the years through several surgeries.
Mia Robertson is now 10 years old. Her parents learned that she had a cleft lip and possible cleft palate at 31 weeks into the pregnancy through a 4-D ultrasound; Mia was born at 37 weeks. Over the years, Mia underwent several surgeries, including a bone graft procedure this year for her upper jaw. To help raise awareness about the issue, Missy and her husband Jase Robertson started the Mia Moo Fund.
At a Capitol Hill press conference sponsored by Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), who was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate, Jase and Missy Robertson talked about the topic and answered questions. A person in the crowd mentioned the ultrasound pictures that revealed Mia’s condition and asked Missy Robertson, “Was there ever a thought in your mind you might not follow through with the pregnancy?”
Missy Robertson said, “Absolutely not. No. That thought never entered my mind. God gave each and every one of us life, as a gift. And each life has value and importance. And Mia has a special importance now in her life because of that.”
