An Oregon man has contracted the plague — a disease that killed a third of Europe’s population during the Black Death pandemic in the 14th century — from a cat bite, public health officials have confirmed.
The man in his 50s is in critical condition and under quarantine at a hospital in Bend. The unidentified man was bit on the hand while he tried to get a dead mouse out of the mouth of his outdoor cat on June 2.
Lab tests confirmed the man suffers from the plague, the Crook County Health Department said Thursday night.
