32% of Americans: ‘Animals Deserve Exact Same Right as People to be Free from Harm’

About a third of Americans now say that animals deserve exactly the same right as people to be free from harm and exploitation, according to a new Gallup poll.

From May 6-10, Gallup asked 497 adults living the United States this question: “Which of these statements comes closest to your view about the treatment of animals: animals deserve the exact same right as people to be free from harm and exploitation, animals deserve some protection from harm and exploitation, but it is still appropriate to use them for the benefit of humans, or animals don’t need much protection from harm and exploitation since they are just animals?

32 percent said they believed that animals deserve the exact same right as people to be free from harm and exploitation. 62 percent said animals deserve some protection from harm and exploitation but it is still appropriate to use them for the benefit of humans. And 3 percent said animals don’t need much protection from harm and exploitation since they are just animals.”
